Who Originated the Revision Idea of "Our Home ON Native Land!"?

William Shatner Sings O Canada! Watch at the 1:20 to 1:30 mark of this video. Shatner points out that the current version of O Canada! is rude; that it should be sung as "Our home ON Native land!". Shatner did this video in 2011 on the occasion when he received his Lifetime Achievement Award from Canada's Governor General.

Petition Comments - June, 2012

We owe so much to our First Nations. We would not have survived a single winter without them. If you go to Europe, people live in tiny spaces compared to our huge allotments of land which we took with or without the permission of our First Nations. Our very high standard of living would NOT have been achievable without the First Nations. The LEAST we can do is acknowledge their huge contribution to our wealth each time we sing our national anthem.
~ Susan Rankin, Petition Signer #62

This is a start in the awakening process for non-native and native people and we must do ongoing truth and reconciliation for all groups by uncensoring education, government, business, media and making action steps to achieve a new Canada that allows for diversity and for unity with diversity with love, hope, justice and equality as best we can: Fairness within Freedom and Freedom within Fairness and this means sustainable living for all sentient beings... We have been on the wrong path and native culture can help us reconnect and rebalance our lives and make the future brighter and better than how we handled (mishandled) things...
James, Signer #158

I agree with this change!
~ Bernadette Greene, Petition Signer #3

Makes sense to me :)
~ Mar Jefferies, Signer #4

i have to agree with Shatner.. i have long felt it was wrong.. and for those that feel it is wrong to mess with tradition, i say this,, it was wrong to ignore history..
Karla Lysne Broadfoot, Signer #8

Always has been, since the Loyalist started slaughtering my ancestors, nothing has changed. We need to remove the leach of the crown off of Canada entirely.
Kim Hunter, Signer #11

Agreed, good idea.
Bob Ferguson, Signer #13

Excellent idea - a great way to celebrate Canada for what it was.
Helen Pettingill, Signer #18

This would honor the First Nations people as founding fathers along with the French and English, of this country called Canada.
Debra Stawnyczy, Signer #19

It's about time. Apologies are not enough. .
Kaeleen Foote, Signer #20

So true - so true! Give our native people what is owed them - recognition!
Sharman, Signer #22

Colonialism has continued for far too long. It is time to stop this ignorance towards this land's founders.
Graham, Signer #26

It is their native land! My genetic native land is France and a bit of aboriginal genes!
Susanne, Signer #27

Totally agree.
Susan, Signer #28

To be entirely true and honest, to give full due respect where respect is long overdue, change the lyrics to "Our Home on Native Land"
Anonymous, Signer #34

We are on Native Land that we still haven't paid for in ful. Change the words to reflect honesty and respect, for the land we live on courtesy of our First Nation's sacrifices.
Brenda, Signer #38

Part of the apology and reconciliation.
Linda, Signer #40

This should be done, it is about time
Wayne, Signer #47

This land is NOT our land. We are its people.
Joan, Signer #53

Jeffrey, Signer #60

WAY OVER DUE
Joan, Signer #61

Jeff, Signer #64

Kelly, Signer #71

Resolve to Change the Anthem to: Our Home ON Native Ground
Anonymous, Signer #72

I love it!
Roslyn, Signer #81

I very much like this change... it is appropriate and shows respect. .
Myst, Signer #84

I support this petition to change O Canada our home ON Native Land
Shannon, Signer #86

Yes.
Patrick, Signer #89

It is atrocious that the Canadian Government fails to recognize Native land claims across Canada. I live in the town of Caledonia near the DCE which has been occupied now for the past 6 years. There is no reason for negotiations to have stopped. Canadians occupy Kanata; it is not the other way around. The Natives are called First Nations for a reason: they were here first!
Barbara, Signer #90

Well let’s be honest. It was there land and always will be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Natalie, Signer #91

I have sang the anthem this way for a long time and very much like the idea of an official change that shows respect for our First Nations.
Myst, Signer #92

it’s about time .. I have always felt this way.
Paul, Signer #95

On.....not and...
Roy, Signer #101

This is a great idea.
Nomi, Signer #102

Way to go! It's time for the human race to work side by side with the native brothers & sisters so we may have a healthy, happy future here with mother earth and father sky. Love, Light & Peace your way!
Sonya, Signer #110

I'm going to start using it as my official song anyway.
Emma, Signer #111

I most definitely agree, change a three letter word to a two letter word makes all the difference. Mígwetch
Loretta, Signer #112

Yup.
Sherry, Signer #114

oh yeah!
Daphne, Signer #116

Absolutely a great idea. Love it!!!
Joni, Signer #119

Great idea!
Cheena, Signer #124

Good idea - way past time!
John, Signer #125

Truth hurts those that cannot tolerate it.
Janis, Signer #126

Its should be done since long time.
Jean-Guy, Signer #127

It is about time, after hundreds of years, that respect was finally shown to the real Founding Fathers of our Nation! What a beautiful way to do it.... on the first line every time the National Anthem is played.
Anonymous, Signer#129

lt's the least we can do.
Tracey, Signer #136

Our First People's should be treated with respect and all policies designed to limit culture, language and prosperity should be abolished.
Cyndi, Signer #142

Recognizing the loss of Canada's Indigenous peoples' rights by changing one word to "ON" is a brilliant way to honour them and outwardly accept the true history of Canada.
Sharon, Signer #143

Truly, that second line .. is it being ironic in a very cruel way?
~ Susie

This made me smile. My native blood was hidden for a couple of generations -- out of a misplaced sense of shame, I suppose. I am very proud of that blood. I would love to see this change to the anthem!
~ Myst

Natives were here first so they deserve our respect!
~ Richard

why not...it is the truth!
~ Angela

I like the idea.
